1989 – 1990

In 1989 he moved to Benfica of Lisbon, Portugal, thus coming to Europe to replace Carlos Mozer, who had been sold to Marseille; in his first experience outside Brazil he played 21 games as a starter (plus one as a substitute), scoring 5 goals. There he got to play in the Champions Cup final, played on May 23 at Vienna’s Prater Stadium then lost 1-0 to AC Milan.
