The legend of football defence

From emerging as a promising talent in grassroots leagues to becoming a defensive powerhouse at top international clubs, his journey is marked by record-breaking performances, championship triumphs, and an enduring legacy in football defence.

My story

1986-1989

Aldair started playing football in his hometown: having moved to Rio, he auditioned for Vasco da Gama, but was rejected; noticed by Juarez, a former Flamengo player, while playing a game among friends, he joined the Flamengo youth team.

In 1989 he moved to Benfica of Lisbon, Portugal, coming to Europe to replace Carlos Mozer, who was transferred to Marseille; in his first experience outside Brazil he played 21 games as a starter (plus one as a substitute), scoring five goals.

1990-2003

Bought in 1990 by Giallorossi president Dino Viola for 6 billion lire, he spent thirteen seasons with Roma, with whom he won a Coppa Italia in the 1990-1991 season, a Serie A championship in 2000-2001 and an Italian Super Cup in 2001.

He made his senior national team debut on 15 March 1989 against Ecuador. After two friendlies against Paraguay (12 April) and Portugal (8 June) Aldair was included in the squad for the 1989 Copa America. Initially a reserve, he then became a starter during the competition, and played six matches: at the end of the Cup, Brazil were crowned champions.
